Skin Checks & Skin Cancer Management in Broadbeach, Gold Coast

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world — and Queensland, with its intense UV levels year-round, sits at the top of that statistic. Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. On the Gold Coast, where outdoor lifestyles are part of everyday life, regular skin checks are not optional — they are essential.

At Haan Health, our GPs provide thorough skin examinations for patients of all ages. Early detection gives the best opportunity for simple, effective treatment. If something needs further assessment, we act on it promptly and without delay.

Whether you are visiting us for the first time or are a long-standing patient, every consultation at Haan Health is conducted with the same standard of care: thorough, unhurried, and genuinely patient-centred.

Our Skin Check & Skin Cancer Services

Full Body Skin Examinations A comprehensive skin check involves a systematic head-to-toe examination of all sun-exposed and unexposed skin. Our GPs look for any lesions, moles, or spots that show signs of change, irregular borders, unusual colour, or concerning features. We take the time to be thorough.

We recommend annual skin checks for most adults living in Queensland, and more frequent checks for patients with a personal or family history of skin cancer, fair skin, or significant sun exposure.

Mole & Lesion Assessment If you have a mole or spot that has changed in size, shape, or colour — or if you have noticed a new or unusual lesion — our GPs will assess it carefully. We use clinical assessment and dermoscopy (dermatoscope evaluation) to examine lesions in detail.

Biopsy & Histopathology When a lesion requires further investigation, our GPs can perform a skin biopsy and arrange histopathological analysis through 4Cyte Pathology (onsite) to determine the nature of the tissue. This step is critical for accurate diagnosis.

In-House Minor Surgical Removals For lesions that require removal — whether for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes — our GPs can perform minor surgical excisions in-clinic. This includes removal of BCCs (basal cell carcinomas), SCCs (squamous cell carcinomas), and other benign or suspicious lesions identified during examination.

Specialist Referrals When a lesion or diagnosis requires the expertise of a dermatologist or specialist surgeon, we provide prompt referrals with full supporting clinical documentation. We do not delay when referral is needed.

Skin Cancer Follow-Up & Monitoring For patients with a history of skin cancer or high-risk lesions, we provide structured follow-up appointments and ongoing monitoring to track any changes over time.

Who Should Have a Regular Skin Check?

A skin check is recommended for everyone — but particularly for:

People with fair skin, red or blonde hair, or blue eyes. Those with a history of sunburn, especially in childhood. Anyone with a personal or family history of skin cancer. Patients with many moles or irregular/atypical moles. Outdoor workers or those with high lifetime UV exposure. Anyone who has noticed a new or changing spot, regardless of age.

If you are in any doubt, book a skin check. A thorough examination takes around 20–30 minutes and could be one of the most important appointments you make this year.

A thorough full body skin examination typically takes 20–30 minutes. Please book a long appointment to allow adequate time.

What should I wear to a skin check?

Does Medicare cover skin checks?

For most adults in Queensland, an annual skin check is a sensible approach. Your GP may recommend more frequent checks based on your individual risk profile.

What happens if my GP finds something concerning?

Your GP will explain what they have found, discuss the next steps (which may include biopsy, removal, or specialist referral), and ensure you understand the plan clearly before you leave.
