Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs) are among the most effective forms of contraception available — with effectiveness rates of over 99% when correctly inserted. Unlike daily pills or other short-acting methods, LARCs work continuously for years without requiring daily action, making them a practical and highly reliable choice for many people.
At Haan Health, our GPs are experienced in the insertion and removal of both hormonal IUDs (such as Mirena and Kyleena) and Implanon (the subdermal contraceptive implant). We provide thorough consultations before any procedure, clear aftercare guidance, and follow-up to ensure everything is progressing well.
Hormonal IUD (Mirena / Kyleena) — Insertion The hormonal IUD is a small, T-shaped device placed inside the uterus by a trained GP or gynaecologist. It releases a low dose of progestogen locally, which thickens cervical mucus and thins the uterine lining to prevent pregnancy. Mirena is effective for up to 8 years; Kyleena for up to 5 years. Both can be removed at any time if you decide to discontinue.
Before insertion, your GP will take a full medical and contraceptive history, discuss the procedure in detail, and ensure you are an appropriate candidate. A separate procedure appointment is arranged after the initial consultation.
Hormonal IUD — Removal IUD removal is a straightforward procedure performed by your GP in the clinic. You may choose to have a new device inserted at the same appointment if you wish to continue using this method.
Implanon (Contraceptive Implant) — Insertion The Implanon NXT is a small, flexible rod about the size of a matchstick, inserted under the skin of the inner upper arm. It releases etonogestrel (a progestogen) and is effective for up to 3 years. Insertion is performed under local anaesthetic and takes only a few minutes.
Implanon — Removal Implanon removal is performed in-clinic under local anaesthetic. The rod is located (usually by feel or, if needed, by ultrasound) and removed through a small incision. Removal typically takes 10–15 minutes.
Step 1 — Initial Consultation Book a long appointment with your GP to discuss LARC options, your medical history, and which method is most appropriate for you. This is a dedicated discussion — not a rushed conversation.
Step 2 — Procedure Appointment A separate appointment is booked for the insertion. Your GP will explain everything that will happen before, during, and after the procedure. Most IUD insertions take around 10–15 minutes; Implanon insertions take approximately 5–10 minutes.
Step 3 — Aftercare & Follow-Up Your GP will provide clear aftercare instructions and arrange a follow-up appointment to check that everything is in order.
Our GPs provide a thorough, supportive approach to LARC services. New patients are welcome.
